Notice: GeekPress is back up and running, thanks to Paul! It's still a not-so-serious tech news blog, but the format is significantly looser. Diana, having given up programming for philosophy, has her own philosophical blog NoodleFood. More of her work can be found at DianaHsieh.com.

With a fast net connection and an extra PC, Bill Rosenblatt was able to create a broadband stereo with minimal amount of time, effort, and money. He tells us his tale.
I'm looking forward to setting up such a system one of these days...

Under the terms of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, nations are required to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in order to protect the ozone layer. In New Zealand, nearly 43% of their greenhouse gases comes from the methane in sheep belches and farts. Hence, scientists are working feverishly to find ways to modify either the sheep's diet or their intestinal microbial flora in order to comply with the treaty.
Sounds like a high-pressure scientific endeavour!

How accurate are traditional fingerprint identifications taken from crime scenes? According to this article, their reliability has not been as well-established scientifically as television and the movies might lead one to believe.
Perhaps a better way would be to adopt a probabilistic approach, such as is done with DNA evidence, rather than claiming a zero error rate -- i.e., a mismatch proves that a suspect did not leave the fingerprint in question, but an apparent match means that only, say, 1 in 5 million people would have left a similar-appearing print.

Jimmy Wales of Bomis alerted me to this amazingly effective Google scam, in which a ring of domains and sham discussions of over 2000 nude celebrities are used to drive Googlers to a single adult site. I just had to investigate.
Why didn't I think of that?!?

The top ten things Bill Gates said when he found out that Microsoft had been hacked. The best one is actually true: "The security breach did not involve a security vulnerability in any Microsoft product."
What, did they just not know how to configure all their Linux servers and Macs properly?

On the net, people can easily masquerade as someone else, without the need for an itchy Halloween costume. Whether the purpose is self-help or spying on political enemies, more people than one might expect use the anonymity of the web to do naughty deeds.
The frequency of men pretending to be women online proves that its not the feel of the silky pink underwear that induces men to take a walk on the feminine side!
